What is plasma skin resurfacing?

Plasma skin resurfacing and tightening is a cosmetic procedure that uses plasma energy to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, and other skin imperfections. The procedure uses a device that generates a high-energy plasma arc to vaporize the top layer of skin, promoting the growth of new, healthy skin. The procedure also causes collagen and elastin fibers in the skin to contract, which can result in a tighter, firmer appearance.

Plasma skin resurfacing and tightening is a nonsurgical alternative to traditional facelifts and other invasive procedures, and it typically requires little to no downtime.

How does plasma skin resurfacing improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles?

At Spencer Wellness Center, Linda Spencer uses the Opus Plasma® device for plasma skin tightening. She will pass the Opus laser handpiece over the treatment area. While most patients don't report discomfort, a topical anesthetic is applied before your treatment begins to ensure a comfortable experience.

During the treatment, you will feel the heat from the handheld applicator, followed by cold air from the system's built-in cooling technology. The device's energy destroys dead and damaged skin cells while stimulating your skin's collagen production. Depending on your complexion and skin condition, the treatment may be customized for resurfacing, tightening, or both.

You will have redness similar to a sunburn in the treated area, but this will likely fade after 24 – 72 hours. The number of treatments needed to get your desired results will vary based on your aesthetic goals, and treatments are typically 4 – 6 weeks apart. Revitalized skin should maintain its appearance for years but may be maintained with follow-up sessions if needed.

The device uses a small handheld wand placed very close to the skin, and a small electrical discharge is created between the tip and the skin. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort and minimal downtime.

What will my skin feel and look like after Opus Plasma skin resurfacing treatment?

Almost immediately following the procedure, the treated area may be red, swollen, and tender to the touch. It is normal to experience some mild discomfort or a burning sensation. The skin may also appear sunburned or have small dark spots, which will flake off after a few days.

It is essential to follow the post-treatment instructions provided by our team. This will involve avoiding sun exposure, using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, and avoiding harsh or abrasive skin care products.

It is also important to avoid any activities that may cause sweat to accumulate on the treated area, such as exercising or sauna, until the area is fully healed. It can take a few days to several weeks for the redness to subside and for the new skin to heal. In some cases, a series of treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results.
